Sofia hosted the conference “How Do We Tell Stories of Violence” on Wednesday night. The event was organized by the Association of European Journalists – Bulgaria and WakeUp Foundation.
Preslava Fentham-Fletcher of the WakeUp Foundation said: “In Bulgaria, we learn about violence solely through the media. We still lack an information system and a national registry that would give us a true picture of the scale of the problem we must all work to combat.”
The Bulgarian technology company Sensika presented its report “How Do Bulgarian Media Cover Cases of Domestic Violence and Violence Against Children in Bulgaria” during the event. The study covers the period from December 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026, and analyzes nearly 42,000 publications in Bulgarian online media, as well as over 750 articles in print and broadcast media, related to the most widely covered cases of domestic violence and violence against children during that period. Sensika Executive Director Konstantin Hristov described the study as extremely important, because the problem is growing without attracting sufficient public attention.
Czech documentary filmmaker and investigative journalist Apolena Rychlikova will speak about responsible journalistic coverage of gender-based violence and sexual exploitation, as well as the impact her investigations have had on Czech legislation. The conference will also feature Teresa Parker, a leading British expert on domestic and gender-based violence, who will present approaches to distinguishing secondary victimization of survivors.
Yoana Hincheva of Sensika presented the key findings of the report. She spoke about the sensationalist language the media often uses, how the focus is on the incident rather than the systemic problem, the disclosure of the victims’ identities, and instances where the institutional voice dominates at the expense of the expert voice. Also notable is the excessive use of details surrounding the case, which serve only to satisfy readers’ curiosity.
Documentary filmmaker and investigative journalist Apolena Rychlikova, Editor-in-Chief of the Czech independent media outlet Page Not Found, spoke about what constitutes responsible journalism. She discussed editorial pressure and how to work with victims and institutions. In her words, victims are vulnerable sources, and an important part of a journalist’s job is to take care of them, because they may be afraid and unsure of what lies ahead. Rychlikova said she strives to provide them with space and some control over the article itself.
Teresa Parker, a leading British expert on domestic and gender-based violence, spoke about how communication can help change public attitudes toward violence. She presented the code of ethics for reporting on violence in the British media. In her words, sometimes when a person goes through the criminal justice system, even if they achieve the best possible outcome, it does not feel like justice because the victim’s life is changed forever. One thing that can change that sense of justice is the way the victim’s story is told.
On October 22, the programme will continue with workshops where Bulgarian women journalists will learn more about investigating violence and exploitation online, as well as protecting themselves against the increasingly widespread problem of digital harassment.
