The media world exploded Wednesday night over a stunning Wall Street Journal report detailing Kimberly Guilfoyle’s alleged efforts to get a Trump donor to pay $100,000 toward her American Express bill, while apparently worrying about leaving a paper trail.

Guilfoyle pressed Republican donor Eric Deters in July 2025 to wire $100,000 directly to American Express as she prepared for her Senate confirmation hearing, according to The Journal.
“Honey please I need you to get this done for me today,” Guilfoyle allegedly wrote, later adding: “It won’t show up anywhere if you wire money to American Express. Please.”

The Journal also reported that Deters had previously paid Guilfoyle hundreds of thousands of dollars and was seeking her assistance with tax and legal problems. Guilfoyle allegedly relayed messages to government officials on his behalf and urged him to use Signal rather than create written records.
Guilfoyle’s attorney disputed the authenticity of the Signal messages but did not identify specific messages he said were false. A U.S. Embassy official defended her, saying Guilfoyle “remains committed to representing the American people with dedication and integrity.”
Deters ultimately did not make the $100,000 payment, The Journal claimed, because he feared his wife would leave him if he did.

The exposé, however, which landed less than a year after Guilfoyle was confirmed as President Donald Trump’s ambassador to Greece, drew particularly fierce responses from conservative Trump critics.
“I’m not sure I’ve read a story over the past decade that better captures the grifter culture of TrumpWorld better than this one,” The Dispatch editor Stephen Hayes wrote. “Detail after amazing detail. Jaw-dropping, and yet none of it is really surprising.”
Tom Nichols was similarly scathing, writing: “The grifting is bad enough, but the grubby vulgarity of it all should embarrass every American.”
Bulwark managing editor Sam Stein called the report “the most comically corrupt thing i’ve read in a long time,” while colleague Tim Miller wrote: “The scale of the theft is beyond people’s imagination.”

“I cannot get over how f*cking stupid @kimguilfoyle is,” he wrote. “Babe!!! Stop documenting our crimes!! Signal me babe!!! Crime me on Signal!”
Others, likewise, weighed in with their astonishment:
