Nearly 100 Bulgarian companies will receive EUR 61.5 million to modernize their production of defence products and dual-use goods. The funding has been secured under a procedure within the Competitiveness and Innovation in Enterprises Programme, managed by the Executive Agency European Funds for Competitiveness under the Ministry of Innovation and Digital Transformation (MIDT), the Ministry said.
Nearly 200 micro, small, medium-sized and large companies applied under the scheme. They were eligible to request grants ranging from EUR 51,129 to EUR 3.6 million. The European funding can be used to purchase machinery, equipment, specialized software, as well as patents, licenses and know-how.
The aim is to enable companies to improve their industrial capacity in the production of defence products and dual-use goods. Examples of dual-use goods include high-performance computers and microprocessors, radar systems, LiDAR systems, cryptographic software, drones, other unmanned aircraft and more. The procedure will also provide funding for construction and installation works, which may not exceed 50% of the total eligible costs of the respective projects.
The approved companies will be invited by the Executive Agency under the Ministry of Innovation and Digital Transformation to sign contracts.
Due to the large number of project proposals placed on backup lists, the Managing Authority will discuss options for securing additional funding to increase the budget allocated to the procedure.
As of mid-April, when the application deadline closed, the budget for the measure stood at approximately EUR 70.6 million. At that time, demand for the scheme was more than twice the available funding.
