A spokesperson for Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) gave an update on his health Saturday, as calls for transparency mount over the veteran elected official’s weeks-long absence from Capitol Hill.

“The Senator continues to meet with staff regarding Senate and Kentucky business, including discussions on defense appropriations, foreign policy, the farm bill, constituent services and constituent federal grant requests,” Spokesman David Popp said in a statement to The Washington Post.

Popp added, “As the Senator continues to improve in rehab, we will be sure to keep you updated.”

McConnell has been absent for about six weeks, ever since being rushed to the hospital on June 14 after being reportedly found unconscious in his home.

The prolonged absence has sparked conspiracy theories and wild speculation, including a post from Trump confidante Laura Loomer claiming McConnell was actually brain dead.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY) has repeatedly called for clarity, after telling the press he has received no direct communication from McConnell’s office about the 84-year-old senator’s health.

The senator’s office shared a lengthy statement from McConnell on July 12, along with a photo with his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, and a copy of The Washington Post’s sports section from that day.

In that statement, McConnell said that the fall didn’t cause him to break any bones, nor did he suffer a heart attack, a stroke, a hemorrhage, or a concussion.

McConnell did say he was “briefly unconscious” and then taken to the hospital, where he has been recovering and “deal[ing] with a mild case of pneumonia.”

“I’ve been able to move from hospital care to a rehabilitation center where I’ll keep regaining my strength,” McConnell wrote.

The Post noted that “McConnell’s absence has narrowed Republicans’ edge in the Senate, giving them an effective 52-47 majority as long as he is absent.”

Beshear threw more gas on the fire when he claimed earlier this month he received two calls from agencies suggesting McConnell died while he was in the hospital.

“In fact, I’d gotten two calls from different agencies, not state agencies, suggesting he’d passed,” Beshear told journalist Katie Couric on her podcast. The Kentucky governor didn’t go into specifics about which agencies called him or more details of what they said.
