The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) said on Thursday it will alert EU institutions and law enforcement authorities over what it described as “police repression and pressure, and the use of the security services as a political bludgeon” reminiscent of the communist-era political police. The party said in a Facebook post that the use of the police and the security services reflects fear and panic over the impending failure of Rumen Radev’s government.
The party complained that police conducted operations against three MRF-backed town mayors on three consecutive days, noting that this was taking place in the run-up to the presidential election on October 25. The statement added that the actions could be linked to the MRF’s promise to expose “the corruption schemes” of the ruling Progressive Bulgaria party and the “Radev-Koprinkov” model, the refusal of MRF mayors to accept “shameful offers” to support that model in exchange for peace and protection, or the MRF’s criticism of the Radev government’s “spineless foreign policy”.
“Through its incompetence, Progressive Bulgaria has declared war on everyone: people struggling under the pressure of high prices; the most vulnerable, including pensioners, children and the sick; trade unions; businesses; farmers; traders; bankers; students; young doctors; the administration and civil servants; and property and car owners. Radev will not be able to hide his failure behind high-profile police operations, the MRF stated.
Earlier, the MRF said it would refer the matter to the prosecution service to investigate the facts and circumstances surrounding possible political pressure on the mayor of Belitsa in favour of Progressive Bulgaria.
On Wednesday, police escorted Belitsa Mayor Radoslav Revanski out of the municipal administration building. Commenting on the operation in Belitsa, the MRF leader described the police presence as “unprecedented”. He wondered what role the State Agency for National Security was playing in the operations, given that the agency has no investigative powers.
