Balgarianovinite.com An exhibition by graduates of the National Academy of Art (NAA) is among the displays featured on Sunday in the programme of the 42nd Apollonia Festival of Arts. The exhibition is housed at the Dukova House in Sozopol.
NAA Rector Prof. Georgi Yankov told BTA that this is the Academy’s fourth participation in Apollonia and that it has already built up experience and a tradition of presenting recent bachelor’s and master’s graduates at the festival.
He explained that, because of the limited exhibition space, the works are selected in advance, with several pieces chosen from each department and programme. A further selection is then made in Sozopol to adapt the display to the available space.
Yankov said the exhibition gives the public an opportunity to see what Academy students are working on and the level of their training.
“I hope, first of all, that it shows they have learned what they were supposed to during these four years and that they have received an education in the visual arts,” the Rector said. He expressed hope that the works would also stand out through their style, individuality and the confidence with which the young artists work in different fields.
The exhibition includes traditional applied arts such as woodcarving, ceramics and textiles, as well as fine arts including painting, printmaking and sculpture.
Yankov said one of the most interesting aspects is that the boundaries between disciplines are becoming increasingly blurred. A work may appear to have been created by someone from a different specialty, while students in fields such as painting or textiles experiment with other materials and conceptual approaches.
“The boundaries between the different genres are becoming increasingly blurred. I think that is a good thing and the right direction, when an artist can move freely across the different fields of visual art,” he said.
The Apollonia Festival of Arts has been held since 1984. It is organised by the Apollonia Foundation, established in 1991. Every year, the Apollonia stages in Sozopol attract hundreds of artists and thousands of art enthusiasts from Bulgaria and around the world. The festival aims to preserve cultural traditions and support new talent in various art forms. This year’s programme includes more than 70 events in music, theatre, literature, film and visual arts. BTA is a media partner of the event and will take part in the “Price of Success” section with a presentation of the 12 issues of LIK magazine published from the previous edition of Apollonia to the present. The event will be held on September 1.
