A former television news anchor was sentenced to life in prison Monday after pleading guilty to murdering her 80-year-old mother inside her Wichita, Kansas, home.

Angelynn Mock, 48, received a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 25 years for the killing of Anita Avers, according to local ABC affiliate KAKE. Mock pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in August.
Police were called to Avers’ home on the morning of Oct. 31, 2025, following a report of a cutting. Officers encountered Mock outside the residence with injuries to her hands before discovering Avers unresponsive in her bed with multiple stab wounds.

Avers was transported to a hospital, where she died shortly afterward.
Mock’s mental health became a significant issue as the criminal case proceeded. Her stepfather told investigators that Mock had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and experienced delusions and depression, according to court documents cited by KAKE.
A judge ordered Mock to undergo a competency evaluation during a hearing last November. In January, she was found incompetent to stand trial and sent to Larned State Hospital for additional evaluation. Judge Jeffrey Goering later determined in July that she was competent to face the charges.

Mock previously worked as a morning news anchor at KTVI in St. Louis from 2011 to 2015 and later worked at KOKH in Oklahoma City. By the time of her mother’s killing, she had left the television news business and was working in sales for a data management software company.
Her stepfather told investigators that Mock lost her St. Louis job following “an explosive situation involving alcohol,” according to a probable cause affidavit.
Under Monday’s sentence, Mock is not eligible to receive a 15% reduction for good behavior, though she will receive credit for the nearly one year she has already spent in custody.

Mock told the court she does not plan to appeal her conviction or sentence. She has two weeks to reverse that decision.
