The number of U.S. troops listed as wounded during the war in Iran has jumped by 37 this week, with the Pentagon offering no public explanation for the newly added injuries.
The Defense Casualty Analysis System, the Pentagon’s official database tracking military casualties, now lists 861 service members as wounded since the conflict began, The Washington Post reported Friday.
The latest additions consist of 29 Navy sailors and eight Marines. It remains unclear when or how they were injured, and military officials have not announced any recent attack or incident involving U.S. forces that would account for the increase.
A Navy official told the Post that all 29 sailors have returned to duty, but did not provide details about how or when they were injured. The Navy and Marine Corps referred further questions to U.S. Central Command, which declined to comment. Pentagon spokespeople did not respond to requests for comment.
More than half of the 861 wounded troops are now classified under “Overseas Operations,” a designation used for casualties recorded after the failed July ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran. Earlier casualties were recorded under “Operation Epic Fury,” the Trump administration’s name for the conflict.
According to the Post, defense officials have previously cautioned that additions to the database can be delayed, particularly in cases involving concussions or brain injuries where symptoms may take time to appear.
The unexplained increase comes, though, as the Trump administration has maintained that the ongoing confrontation with Iran should not be characterized as a war. Earlier this month, the president called it “small potatoes,” while Vice President JD Vance claimed that “there is no active shooting.”
The administration has also faced questions over its accounting of U.S. deaths during the conflict. The Post reported last week that as many as five military fatalities were absent from the Pentagon database, allegations that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called “DISGUSTING and FAKE.”
The official death count rose from 18 to 19 this week, noted the Post, after an Army officer suffered a medical emergency while traveling to the Middle East on Sept. 18.
