Balgarianovinite.com The creative work and the spiritual journey of Pencho Slaveykov (1866-1912) and his ties to Bulgarian culture were among the main topics of the discussion “Pencho Slaveykov Today”, held at BTA’s national press club in Razgrad on Friday. The event was part of BTA’s camaign “Pencho Slaveykov and Bulgarian Modernism”, dedicated to the 160th anniversary of the poet’s birth.
During the discussion, literary scholars, historians, teachers, students and artists presented various aspects of Slaveykov’s life and work, including his place in Bulgarian modernism, his relationships with his contemporaries and his influence on the country’s cultural life. The meeting was moderated by poet, literary scholar and critic Prof. Yordan Eftimov. He noted that Pencho Slaveykov can be viewed as a counterpart to Ivan Vazov, with his own cultural project. Slaveykov created his own pantheon and “cartography” of the major ideas of his time.
Prof. Rositsa Angelova of the Regional History Museum in Razgrad presented the connection between the work of painter Iliya Petrov and the intellectual environment shaped in the spirit of Pencho Slaveykov. Through his brush, Petrov became a chronicler of intellectual Sofia, she said.
State Archives in Razgrad chief expert Dr. Darina Koleva recalled Mara Belcheva’s memories of the poet, in which she described him as “curly-haired, dark and agile.”
Local historian Miroslava Katsarova spoke about Dimcho Debelyanov’s disposition toward Pencho Slaveykov, whom the young Debelyanov regarded as a spiritual mentor.
Teacher at Nikola Ikonomov Primary School, Daniel Peev, said that Slaveykov demonstrated that a person can turn suffering into strength and seek harmony with nature.
Students Stefani Hristova and Tuana Yuksel presented their perspectives on the poet’s work. They noted that themes of love, motivation and the will to move forward make Slaveykov’s poetry relatable to young people.
Poet Dacho Gospodinov described Slaveykov as an example of spiritual strength and the ability to turn difficulties into motivation.
Journalist Mitko Hanchev spoke about the literary dispute between Slaveykov and Razgrad native Petar Daskalov, which places him among the participants in the cultural debates of his time.
Director of Prof. Boyan Penev Regional Library Ivan Ivanov presented a 1978 publication, held in the library’s collection, that contains Petko Slaveykov’s account of the Razgrad region.
The discussion was also attended by writer Denitsa Dilova, poet Ivan Dimitrov, and chief experts Teodora Nenkova and Aylin Madzharova from the Education, Youth Activities and Sports Department of Razgrad Municipality. The meeting in Razgrad was the 29th event in BTA’s “Pencho Slaveykov and Bulgarian Modernism” campaign.
The initiative “Pencho Slaveykov Today” is being held in all 33 national press clubs of BTA across the country. The first meeting dedicated to Slaveykov was in his hometown of Tryavna on April 27, when the 160th anniversary of his birth was celebrated.
The December 2026 issue of BTA’s LIK magazine will be dedicated to Pencho Slaveykov. In addition to reports from the discussions, the issue will feature a special collection of 160 words by 160 contributors marking the 160th anniversary of the poet’s birth.
