Bulgaria’s position on the war in Ukraine was clearly expressed in her address to the UN General Assembly, President Iliana Iotova told journalists in Yambol, Southeastern Bulgaria, on Sunday.
Iotova said her address stressed that there could be no military solution to the war in Ukraine and that negotiations should begin as soon as possible, without ultimatums.
She also emphasized the role of the European Union in efforts to resolve the conflict, saying all parties to the conflict should be involved in negotiations and that Bulgaria could contribute to finding solutions together with its EU partners.
The President said Bulgaria’s geographical position and proximity to the war made developments particularly important to the country. She highlighted Black Sea security, saying the issue had grown beyond a national or regional concern.
Iotova said disruption to Black Sea shipping could threaten food supplies to Africa and contribute to new migration towards Europe.
Commenting on the separate joint statement on Ukraine presented on behalf of 40 countries during the UN meetings, Iotova stressed that it was a statement rather than a UN or UN Security Council document and was neither put to a vote nor signed.
She said Bulgaria had not withdrawn from the statement and agreed with elements of it, but that the country’s own position had not been reflected in the text. This was why she did not take part in the group photograph associated with the statement, she said.
Iotova said she wanted Bulgaria’s position on achieving peace through negotiations and reopening diplomatic channels to be clearly reflected.
The President also said her UN General Assembly address had been well received and that she had subsequently received three invitations to participate in international programmes and congresses on peace.
Iotova described criticism surrounding the issue as part of what she called a smear campaign ahead of the presidential election in Bulgaria in October.
In Yambol, Iotova met supporters at the Bezisten Cultural and Information Centre. Later on Sunday, she is due to present annual awards to Bulgarian organic producers during the National Organic Festival organized by the Agriculture and Food Ministry.
