President Iliana Iotova had remarks to the joint statement on Ukraine issued by 51 countries at the United Nations on September 23, but amendments were not possible, Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova said during Question Time in Parliament on Friday. Petrova was responding to a question from Democratic Bulgaria MP Nadejda Yordanova about Bulgaria’s decision to join the statement, which was delivered by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas ahead of a UN Security Council meeting.
Iotova headed the Bulgarian delegation to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
Petrova explained that Bulgaria joined the statement because it defended international law and called for peace and an end to hostilities – positions the country consistently supports. The decision also demonstrated support for European unity, she added.
The statement was not a formal UN document and was not subject to a negotiation procedure. When reviewing the text, Iotova requested changes to strengthen the EU’s role and its proposal for a peace agreement, but the statement’s format did not allow amendments, Petrova explained.
She said Bulgaria’s national position had been presented in full by Iotova in her address to the UN General Assembly. The fact that the joint statement did not fully reflect Bulgaria’s position did not indicate a conflict between the two, as the points Iotova wanted included were covered in her address, Petrova added.
Yordanova responded that a country could not have two different positions on an important issue and described the situation as undignified conduct.
