The plane carrying President Iliana Iotova has landed in New York, the President’s Press Secretariat confirmed in the early hours of Wednesday.
The plane was earlier diverted to Boston following an incident involving a severed fibre optic cable in New Jersey.
The delay prompted changes to Iotova’s programme. She is expected to speak to Bulgarian journalists later in the day following the opening of the high-level meeting held as part of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
Earlier, international news agencies reported that the US Federal Aviation Administration had suspended hundreds of flights at major airports in New York, Philadelphia and Boston due to technical problems at a key regional air traffic control centre following the accidental severing of an optical cable during construction work in New Jersey.
President Iliana Iotova is heading the Bulgarian delegation to the general debate opening as part of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The delegation includes Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova, Health Minister Katya Ivkova, Labour and Social Policy Minister Nataliya Efremova, and Parliamentary Foreign Policy Committee Chair Petar Vitanov.
