Veliko Tarnovo will be the centre of celebrations marking the 118th anniversary of the declaration of Bulgaria’s independence on September 22, 1908. Ceremonies will also be held in Sofia, Varna, Burgas and a number of other cities across the country.
In Veliko Tarnovo, the day will begin with a festive liturgy at the Church of the Holy Forty Martyrs, where Prince Ferdinand read the Manifesto declaring Bulgaria’s independence in 1908. A historical reenactment of the events of September 22, 1908, will be staged in the church grounds.
The programme will continue with a military ritual for the raising of the national flag at the Tsarevets Architectural and Museum Reserve, followed by speeches, the laying of wreaths and flowers, and a festive procession to the Mother Bulgaria monument. The representative ensemble of the Armed Forces and musicians participating in the International Military Bands Festival will perform during the celebrations.
At 7:30 p.m., Parliament Chair Mihaela Dotsova will accept the report of the commander of the ceremonial tattoo and deliver a speech marking the anniversary at Tsar Asen I Square. Security measures will be in place for the event, including a ban on drones and controlled access to the security zone.
In Sofia, the anniversary will be marked with an official ceremony at the Independence of Bulgaria monument on Alexander I Square, beginning at 11 a.m. The National Guards Unit will take part, while the programme will feature musical performances by vocal and instrumental ensembles. Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev will deliver a speech. At noon, a ceremonial changing of the guard of honour will take place in front of the Presidential Administration building.
In Varna, the celebrations will be held at Independence Square, with the Bulgarian Navy and the Varna and Veliki Preslav Diocese among the organizers. In Burgas, servicemen from the Navy, Air Force and Joint Special Operations Command will participate in the ceremonies, including a wreath-laying ceremony at the Monument to the 24th Black Sea Infantry Regiment.
Army personnel will take part in commemorative ceremonies in Veliko Tarnovo, Stara Zagora, Haskovo, Yambol, Pleven, Blagoevgrad, Vratsa, Sandanski, Svishtov, Shumen, Sliven, Rousse, Gorna Oryahovitsa and Elin Pelin, while Air Force personnel will participate in the ceremony in Yambol.
The anniversary will also be marked in other cities across Bulgaria.
Bulgaria’s Independence Day was declared an official national holiday in 1998.
