Presidential and vice-presidential candidates Andrey Gurov and Georgi Kandev closed their election campaign in Plovdiv on Wednesday. In their addresses, both stressed that they were not seeking the country’s highest offices for greater power, but rather greater responsibility and an opportunity to change what they see as Bulgaria’s misguided course.
“I want Bulgaria to have its own voice in Europe and to be a reliable NATO ally that defends its interests through preparedness, strong diplomacy and a clear position,” Gurov said.
He argued that the European path was not an ideology, but a means of achieving higher incomes, attracting more investment and ensuring that Bulgarians benefit from the single market. Gurov said he was willing to talk to anyone but would not agree with everyone. He pledged to support the right decisions regardless of who proposed them and to oppose injustice regardless of who was behind it.
“I will not get used to living in uncertainty, thinking that rules are obligations for some and an inconvenience for others, or to calling inaction patience and resignation Bulgaria’s only option,” Gurov said.
He added that if a law threatened people’s rights, he would return it with clear reasons; if it violated the Constitution, he would refer it to the Constitutional Court; and if national security required a collective response, he would use all the powers at his disposal to protect the nation.
“I know the country can be governed better, and I saw that for myself when I served as caretaker prime minister,” Gurov said. He recalled several decisions taken during his time in office, stressing that he had been guided by the principles that the rules apply to everyone and decisions must be made on time.
