Presidential candidate Ivan Hristanov called for a strong, independent presidency at a meeting on Wednesday, saying the head of state must not be a puppet of party headquarters.
He called for a change in the role of the head of state, saying the office had been “trapped” in party interests for 36 years. The institution needed a strong, independent figure who could break free of backroom dealings and defend national sovereignty, he said.
Hristanov urged unity around the concept of the “Bulgarian Dream”. He proposed convening a national round table bringing together trade unions, employers, pensioners’ and youth organizations, associations of reserve officers and non-commissioned officers, and the academic community. The aim was for society to agree collectively on a national cause, ideal and doctrine to guide the country, he said.
Hristanov identified tackling corruption, protecting national security and addressing the demographic crisis as priorities in his platform. He also pointed to the expertise of his running mate, vice-presidential candidate Stoyanka Cherkezova.
The ticket would seek institutional transparency and an active role for the presidency in defending the public interest, to ensure institutions served citizens rather than oligarchic circles. Hristanov’s proposals also included a constitutional amendment to abolish the office of Prosecutor General.
