The profit of the Bulgarian banking system increased by 11.3% year-on-year to EUR 1.4 billion at the end of August, according to data from the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB). Banking system assets reached EUR 121 billion, up EUR 568 million (0.5%) from the end of July. The liquidity coverage ratio stood at 257.7% at the end of August 2026, compared with 239.3% as of July 31, 2026, well above the minimum regulatory requirement of 100%.
Total gross loans and advances stood at EUR 80.6 billion at the end of August, down EUR 836 million (1%) month-on-month. Receivables from credit institutions fell by EUR 1.6 billion (15.5%) during the month to EUR 8.5 billion, while the gross loan portfolio increased by EUR 733 million (1%) to EUR 72 billion. Loans to households rose by EUR 548 million, or 1.6%, including a EUR 346 million increase in loans secured by residential property. Loans to non-financial corporations also increased, by EUR 147 million (0.5%), as did loans to other financial corporations, by EUR 53 million (1%). Loans to the general government sector decreased by EUR 14 million (1.1%).
At the end of August, total deposits in the banking system stood at EUR 100.8 billion, up EUR 191 million (0.2%) from the end of July. During the month, deposits of non-financial corporations increased by EUR 1.2 billion (4.2%), while household deposits rose by EUR 397 million (0.7%). Deposits of credit institutions fell by EUR 1.2 billion (13.6%), while deposits of the general government sector declined by EUR 70 million (2.9%) and those of other financial corporations by EUR 60 million (2.6%).
Expenses for impairment of financial assets not measured at fair value through profit or loss reached EUR 331 million at the end of August 2026, an increase of EUR 118 million (55.3%) compared with the amount reported as of August 31, 2025.
