During a meeting between Prime Minister Rumen Radev and Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova that took place on Tuesday, Radev said that while Bulgaria lacks conclusive evidence regarding the origin of the drones used in the attacks in the Black Sea, the results of these strikes benefit Russia, and also, it makes no sense for Ukraine to destroy its own ships. Mitrofanova was summoned after new drone attacks on ships in the Black Sea were reported earlier Tuesday.
Mitrofanova stated that while she understood this logic, she had no information from the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation regarding the recent attacks on merchant ships. She said that she did not rule out the possibility that these attacks on merchant ships near Bulgarian territorial waters might constitute a provocation by a third party.
Radev was adamant that attacks on merchant ships in the Black Sea are absolutely unacceptable and lead to a significant escalation of the conflict. “Bulgaria will continue to investigate the attacks alongside its EU and NATO allies to establish the truth,” he added.
The Prime Minister said: “Although Bulgaria is not a party to the war, it is suffering significant economic and financial damage. The attacks in the Black Sea have already led to an increased risk to merchant shipping, a rise in insurance premiums and even a refusal to transport cargo to Bulgarian ports. This also makes oil supplies to the Burgas refinery more expensive and jeopardizes them.”
Radev said that Bulgaria will initiate talks with Romania and Turkiye with a view to putting forward joint proposals to ensure the safety of shipping in the Black Sea.
