The Independent’s White House correspondent Andrew Feinberg had plenty of snappy jabs for Vice President JD Vance Tuesday after a bizarre exchange with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.
“Mr. Vice President, if you’re going to insult me at least have the guts to tag my account,” Feinberg captioned a video of the moment shared by Vance on social media.
“President Donald J. Trump eviscerates imbecile ‘journalist’ Andrew Feinberg for misbehaving in the Oval Office,” Vance wrote alongside the video. In the clip, Trump asked Feinberg, “What’s wrong with you? Are you a sick person? I actually think there’s something wrong with you.”
Feinberg shared a second clip in which Trump said to him, “Hey! I don’t know who the hell you are but you better be careful.”

“I had told him exactly who I was not five minutes before this exchange,” Feinberg wrote.
Feinberg also wrote about the experience for The Independent.
“Normally, I am the designated “print pool” reporter approximately once a month, where I file short reports to the rest of the press corps detailing what goes on in the Oval Office or any other event the president attends on the White House grounds or around Washington,” Feinberg explained.
“That’s actually worse. The False Claims Act, which has been on the books since 1863, whistleblowers can get between 10 and 25%… Why would someone who has evidence of genuine fraud go to—” Feinberg continued. “This time, my only function was to ask questions. I had a list that I discussed with my colleagues in New York, but I decided to call an audible and ditch the list when a reporter from the right-wing Daily Wire posted that Trump and Vice President JD Vance planned to unveil a new program and ‘tip line’ to award so-called ‘whistleblowers’ bounties of up to $30,000 (or one percent of any funds recovered) for exposing what the administration believes to be ‘fraud.’”
He added, “For their part, Trump, Vance and even Shirley acted like the idea of rewarding whistleblowers was new and unique to this administration, with the YouTube personality claiming there has ‘never been an incentive for anyone to ever expose fraud’ in the country’s entire history.”
Feinberg contiued:
Because I’ve spent most of my professional life covering the federal government, I know there’s already a mechanism to reward whistleblowers on the books, I knew Shirley — and the rest — were dead wrong about that.
“Trump appeared to point to me more than once, but on each occasion he had apparently intended to call on the Agence France-Presse reporter directly behind me. Because from my vantage point he was pointing directly at my face, I started to speak up,” he also explained.
Feinberg had asked the question about the the False Claims Act around ten minutes before the exchange. “You’re offering 10% for whistleblowers for turning in what you’re describing as fraud—” he said when he was told the correct amount is actually 1%.
The president interjected, “Because it’s a lot of money. And because when they did that, that’s a certain type of crime. But nobody ever thought that you could have stolen $2 trillion or whatever the ultimate number is going to be. And at 1%, people will make millions and millions of dollars for turning in what actually is a somewhat routine crime of, you know, of millions of millions. But we’re talking about we’re talking about billions and actually probably trillions of dollars.”
Vance also expressed frustration with the line of questioning. “First of all, I think that’s a fundamentally dishonest question because over 99% of the fraud that we’re finding in the federal government isn’t covered by the False Claims Act,” he said. “What the president is saying is he wants all fraud to be the sort of thing where if you find it, if you uncover it, you find evidence and allow us to undo the money, you should be able to benefit, not just the very narrow slice that’s covered by the False Claims Act.”
The president then asked who Feinberg was, and Feinberg in turn identified himself.
Feinberg concluded his report by stating, “I was doing my job, and I’ll be right back at it tomorrow.”
