“We are witnessing something unprecedented, something that is difficult to fully assess,” Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev told journalists in Blagoevgrad regarding the agreement reached with Greece to return to Bulgaria the remains of Tsar Samuil. On October 3, they will be transported to Bulgaria and placed in a special sarcophagus in the Church of St Sophia.
Demerdzhiev is in Blagoevgrad for the opening of a training center for the preparation of firefighters and rescue workers in the village of Pokrovnik.
“For years, efforts have been made in this direction, and fortunately, they have now been successful, thanks to the good cooperation between Bulgaria and Greece, as well as the personal efforts of both the prime minister and our ambassador to Greece, which should also be recognized,” the interior minister said.
“We can only welcome on Saturday the remains of this exceptionally famous and tragic Bulgarian tsar,” he said, adding that this is an occasion for citizens to come and take part in the event. “We have taken security measures, but above all, this is an occasion for celebration and tribute,” Ivan Demerdzhiev said.
Asked whether this puts an end to Skopje’s claims, Demerdzhiev stated: “When the sarcophagus of the tsar bears the inscription ‘Tsar of the Bulgarians,’ there is no point in arguing.”
