The operation to pump water from the Danube River into Srebarna Lake, which began in July due to low water levels in the reserve, has concluded. Over 5 million cubic metres of water were transferred over 74 days using two water pump units provided by the General Directorate for Fire Safety and Civil Protection, said the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water in Ruse (on the Danube).
Water from the Danube has now completely flooded the Western Canal, the Babushko Marsh and Draganova Lokva areas, the adjacent small water bodies, and the central water body. The water level at the eastern lock is 75 centimetres.
Although water levels remain low, conditions in the lake are favourable for feeding a variety of waterfowl. Grey geese, Dalmatian and Great White pelicans, herons, ducks, and other birds have been observed in the reserve. Experts from the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water are monitoring the level of the Danube River and are ready to open the sluice gates once suitable water levels are reached.
In early September, a team from the Strashimir Dimitrov Geological Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) conducted thermal imaging of the groundwater in the lake’s water bodies. The study is part of a project to investigate the dynamics of groundwater recharge in the lake’s watershed and basin. The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has provided a report on the karst springs in the reserve, which will be used during the subsequent cleaning of the lake bottom to remove silt and sediment. The studies are ongoing.
The Inspectorate has conducted preliminary assessments for the construction of a permanent pumping station and the deepening of the lake through the removal of silt and sediment. The Ministry of Environment and Water has provided funding for the purchase of two pumps with a capacity of over 1,000 cubic metrеs of water per hour. These will enable the Inspectorate to independently transfer water as needed until a permanent pumping station is built.
Srebarna Lake is one of Bulgaria’s most famous nature reserves, extending over 600 ha, and one of the country’s 100 national tourist sites. Called “El Dorado of Waterfowl” by Austro-Hungarian naturalist Felix Kanitz as early as back in the 1870s, Srebarna Lake is now the breeding ground and wintering site of over 100 species of birds, and a shelter for a diversity of plant and animal species. It is located on the Via Pontica, the main migratory route for birds traveling between Europe and Africa. In 1948, to protect its rich avian life, the lake was designated a bird sanctuary, and in 1977, it was designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve. In 1983, the reserve was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List as a naturally functioning ecosystem providing a vital habitat for the endangered Dalmatian pelican.
