Balgarianovinite.com Romania’s largest parliamentary party, the Social Democratic Party (PSD), and the opposition far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) will jointly table a no-confidence motion against the Government of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. Representatives of both parties announced the move on Monday in a joint statement broadcast live online.
The development comes after the PSD ministers in Bolojan’s Government resigned on April 23. “The resignations represent a political act formalizing the party’s decision to withdraw its political support from Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. From this moment on, he no longer has the support of the parliamentary majority, which means he no longer has the democratic legitimacy to hold the position of leader of the Romanian government,” the PSD stated in a press release.
Marian Neacsu of PSD said that colleagues who believe in the initiative and wish to support it by voting are welcome.
Petrisor Peiu of AUR said that they currently have no agreements with the PSD and are cooperating only on the proposal for the no-confidence motion. He said that AUR’s political goal is to trigger early elections, arguing that the current Government is incapable of managing the country’s economy.
Bolojan said that he will not resign and will continue to fulfil his mandate, adding that he is working on forming a minority government.
Amid the political crisis, President Nicusor Dan held talks during the week of April 20-26 with leaders of the ruling coalition parties. He said they had ruled out governing with anti-Western forces, particularly AUR, and expressed readiness to cooperate on key projects such as the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, OECD accession, and the EU defence instrument SAFE.
Discussions on these key programmes are at the centre of ongoing consultations hosted by the President on Monday with all parties in the governing coalition.
