Balgarianovinite.com Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Duric has said that Serbia was the first country in the region to begin evacuation flights from the Middle East amid the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. In an interview with the private television channel Prva, he noted that the flights were organized to evacuate both Serbian citizens and nationals from other Western Balkan countries.
“It is both our duty and our desire to take care of our people who find themselves in the unenviable position of being in countries affected by conflict,“ he said. Serbia was the first in the region to act, and four flights have already been carried out — one from Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, and three from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, operated by Fly Dubai, Duric noted. “These were regular flights, but thanks to our excellent relations with our friends and partners in the UAE, they were given priority for Belgrade,” Duric said.
He added that efforts are ongoing to assess the security situation and, if necessary, arrange additional evacuation flights.
The Foreign Minister stressed the importance of coordination between diplomats and embassies in times of crisis. “I would like to express my particular gratitude to the embassies working in conflict zones. Because they sometimes put their lives at risk — just as our [embassy staff] did in Iran,” he said.
Duric noted that the staff of Serbia’s embassy in Iran — which was damaged in the attacks — continued working under extremely difficult conditions and managed to evacuate everyone who wished to leave the country. Among those evacuated was a couple with a baby, who were safely transferred to Turkiye.
“Our embassy staff traveled for 16 hours from Tehran to the border with Azerbaijan, through a country at war. I thank them for serving Serbia with dignity in difficult circumstances,” Duric said.
