Bulgaria’s Food Safety Agency (BFSA) has confirmed an initial outbreak of sheep and goat pox at a farm in the village of Petrovo, Stara Zagora Municipality, where 72 small ruminants are kept. The owner alerted the competent authorities after clinical signs of the disease appeared and fully cooperated with veterinary officials, the agency said.
A 5-km protection zone has been established around the outbreak, covering villages in Stara Zagora Region.
A 20-km surveillance zone covers settlements in Stara Zagora and Haskovo regions.
Measures have been taken to control and eradicate the disease in line with EU and national legislation.
Restrictions in the two zones include a ban on the movement of sheep and goats, except animals intended for immediate slaughter under specified conditions. Livestock must be kept indoors, and animal counts, records updates in the VetIS Integrated Information System and official veterinary checks will be carried out. Special requirements also apply to the movement and processing of raw milk from the affected areas.
The disease poses no risk to humans but can cause significant economic losses if it spreads, said the BFSA.
