The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) has detected a primary outbreak of sheep pox and goat pox at a livestock farm in the village of Sarnitsa, Mineralni Bani Municipality, Haskovo Region, where 47 sheep and five goats are kept, the Agency said on Thursday.
A five-kilometre protection zone has been established around the outbreak, covering the villages of Sarnitsa, Angel Voyvoda, Boyan Botevo, Vinevo, Karamantsi, Kolets and Spahievo in Mineralni Bani Municipality.
A 20-kilometre surveillance zone has also been established, covering settlements in the municipalities of Mineralni Bani, Haskovo and Dimitrovgrad in Haskovo Region; Kardzhali, Chernoochene and Ardino in Kardzhali Region; and Asenovgrad and Parvomay in Plovdiv Region.
Measures have been introduced to control and eradicate the disease in accordance with EU and national legislation. Livestock owners are eligible for compensation under the Veterinary Medical Activities Act.
Restrictions in the protection and surveillance zones include a ban on the movement of sheep and goats, except animals intended for immediate slaughter under specified conditions. The animals must be kept indoors.
Livestock holdings in both zones will be subject to a census, updates to their records in the VetIS integrated information system and official veterinary inspections. An epidemiological investigation is also under way to trace movements of animals, products, feed and vehicles associated with the outbreak. Special requirements apply to the transport and processing of raw milk from the affected areas.
Sheep pox and goat pox do not pose a risk to humans but can cause significant economic losses if they spread.
Earlier this week, the BFSA reported a secondary outbreak of sheep pox and goat pox at a livestock farm in the village of Tyanevo, Simeonovgrad Municipality, Haskovo Region, where seven small ruminants are kept.
