During the regular sitting of the National Assembly on Friday, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev reported on the Baba Alino case that involves the construction of illegal residential complex near Varna, on the Black Sea. In response to a question from Kosta Stoyanov MP about seized documents from the “Ukrainian criminal group KYB”, Demerdzhiev reported that 57 site inspections were carried out at premises constituting material evidence in the case. A large number of documents relating to the investigation were found. Another 15 site inspections remain to be performed.
On the initiative of Krassimir Konov, the administrative head of the Varna Appellate Prosecutor’s Office, a working meeting was held with two prosecutors from the Supreme Cassation Prosecution Office, which was also attended by representatives of the Varna Regional Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior, Demerdzhiev added.
An investigation that was launched on May 28, 2026, began with a search and seizure following a report from the Economic Crime Unit of the Varna Regional Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior that, on an unspecified date, documents had been destroyed or concealed with the intention of causing harm or gaining an advantage. The following day, a car and a flat were searched. All searches and seizures were authorized by a judge.
All documentation discovered so far has been sealed as material evidence. The investigation is ongoing.
In early July, Demerdzhiev reported that nine criminal proceedings were initiated around the Baba Alino case. Each of these proceedings concerned a different matter. During the operation in Varna, 25 people were detained for up to 24 hours. Over 140,000 pages of written evidence were seized, and numerous witnesses were interviewed.
