Balgarianovinite.com The Sofia DocuMental documentary film festival will take place from September 24 to October 4 under the motto “Keep Your Eyes Peeled”, the organizers said. Some of the films will remain available online across Bulgaria until the end of October.
The festival will open with Biljana Tutorov and Petar Glomazic’s To Hold a Mountain, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Other programme highlights include the premiere of Milcho Manchevski’s Good People. Pavel Talankin, associated with the Oscar-winning Mr. Nobody Against Putin, will also visit Sofia.
Bulgarian documentaries have a dedicated place in the programme. Rayna Teneva’s Geography Is Destiny explores the coexistence of the rose industry and arms manufacturing in Kazanlak, while Elena Stoycheva’s Elena in Deleyna looks at life around the last village shop in a depopulating Vlach village. Svetoslav Draganov’s Dear Maria portrays actress Maria Statulova.
The Bulgarian selection also includes Cecile Canut and Stefka Stefanova Nikolova’s Between Days Between Nights and Krasimir Andonov’s The Time In Us.
Journalistic investigations and geopolitical crises are the focus of the Current Affairs section, which includes Wagner: Army of Hell and The Salisbury Poisonings: A Spy Next Door, featuring investigative journalist Hristo Grozev.
The Future Is Now section explores new technologies and their impact on human relationships, with films including Virtual Girlfriends, co-produced by Tonislav Hristov, and Elena Andreicheva’s Intelligence Rising. Other strands address women, personal change, patriarchy and archival heritage.
The Art of Resistance strand will return with a special screening of Bowie: The Final Act.
Screenings will be held at several venues across Sofia, including the Cinema House, Odeon Cinema, the French Institute, Goethe-Institut, Czech Centre and Polish Institute. The festival will conclude with an outdoor event and the presentation of the Audience Award.
Sofia DocuMental will also include its MY.CINEMA programme for children and young people, the Another Story initiative dedicated to women directors, and the fifth edition of the Balkan Documentary Market.
