If you have been on social media over the past few years, especially Xitter, you’ve likely seen the meme: Steven Crowder positioned at a college campus, seated at a card table, clutching a coffee mug, with a sign hanging in front. It features a topic with the tagline “Change My Mind.”

It was Crowder’s way of engaging college students on social issues and other topics on the merits of the facts. This format made enough of an impression that the image of Crowder was repurposed by countless others; adjusting the sign to other topics of a user’s choice, and later, other modifications took place in perpetuity.
As the concept took off, he went back to the well, returning to campuses and making it a format used on his broadcasts. This became such a significant item in Crowder’s media realm that it was branded. He actually went forward and trademarked the concept.
“She Who Remains” Screened at Cinelibri
Enter CNN, which staged a town hall for Texas Senate hopeful James Talarico in Fort Worth this week. What immediately stood out to Crowder was a graphic emblazoned with the words, “Change My Mind.” His words.
Crowder said he is preparing a lawsuit.
Now many may think that trying to trademark the concept of sitting down and discussing politics is ridiculous, or that “Change My Mind” is a bit of a commonplace cliché. But looking at the presentation by CNN, and Crowder’s trademark move, you might see some validity to this.
“She Who Remains” Screened at Cinelibri
This is more than a glib post made by the host. On his show, Crowder went into detail as to why he would be moving forward with litigation. There is a history behind his threatened suit.
As he explains it, back when this was a hot format for him, Crowder was actually shopping his wares to larger outlets, and apparently CNN was one of them. He explains that, “I was rejected by cable news, and this exact concept.”
So, will such a lawsuit succeed in the courts? That much remains to be seen.
It’s a high bar, and he will be the one who needs to change the mind of the court, but Crowder’s lawyers have informed him that the case is a “slam dunk.”
