Todor Angelov Elected President of Bulgarian Wrestling Federation as Stanka Zlateva’s Supporters Walk Out

Todor Angelov was elected President of the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation (BWF) at the organization’s General Assembly, while supporters of incumbent chair Stanka Zlateva walked out before the vote here on Saturday.
The General Assembly, held at the Vasil Levski National Sports Academy, started about 45 minutes late with a speech by Zlateva, who said she had “fulfilled all the commitments she had undertaken” and had witnessed “hypocrisy and betrayals” in a male-dominated sport. She then gave the floor to those wishing to speak.
The first to take the floor was former Executive Board member Georgi Murkov, who, along with a number of his colleagues, resigned from the governing body in October. He said he had “repeatedly warned Stanka Zlateva about the people around her” and urged Bulgarian wrestling “not to make itself a laughing stock.”
Votes were then held to appoint vote counters and minute-takers, and Belcho Goranov was elected to chair the meeting. He reported that 126 of the federation’s 139 active clubs were represented. The delegates opted for an open vote by a majority.
After a break, questions were raised about the clubs’ registration and possible errors in the lists. Zlateva’s supporters then left the hall in protest. Goranov said, however, that 112 of the 126 clubs remained present and proceeded with the General Assembly.
As the first item of business, the outgoing Executive Board members were discharged. Angelov then took the floor and said that “the division must come to an end.” He proposed that the new Executive Board include Rahmat Sukra, Belcho Goranov, Valentin Getsov, Evgeni Stamov, Georgi Kalchev, Ivo Angelov, Grisha Ganchev, Armen Nazaryan, Miroslav Gochev, Nikolay Dachev, Tsolo Bozhilski and Stanislav Trendifilov. The proposal was approved by a large majority.
Under the next item, Zlateva was relieved of her position and discharged from liability for her tenure, while Angelov was elected with 94 votes in favour.
“This is a great responsibility for me. With all the resources available to us and with the help of people who want to support wrestling, we will succeed. This will take time. We need to invest in young people and organize more training camps and competitions. If we want more Bulgarians in the sport, we need to focus on children. Thank you, and thanks to Mr Yordanov, Mr Ganchev and the entire wrestling community. I am ready to engage in dialogue with everyone, and I welcome both criticism and praise,” Angelov said.
The General Assembly concluded by approving a new set of regulations for the Federation.
