The solution to ensuring security in Bulgaria’s Black Sea waters is simple: if Bulgaria declares active neutrality, this will guarantee security, including in the country’s exclusive economic zone, presidential candidate and Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov said while speaking with residents in central Varna on Saturday. Any other position taken by Bulgaria would entail risks, he said.
Vazrazhdane is managing to strike the right balance between presenting the actual situation and reassuring the public, Kostadinov added. He described what he called the “sabre-rattling” by Continue the Change and Democratic Bulgaria as entirely misguided and irresponsible with regard to Bulgaria’s national interests.
The politics of Bismarck, which places the national interest of each state at the centre of its political considerations, is making a comeback, Kostadinov said. Bulgaria’s national interest, he added, does not lie in worsening relations with Russia, but in lifting sanctions and resuming imports of cheap Russian fuel.
Kostadinov also said that the bill criminalizing relations with Russia had passed its second reading in the parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee. Under its provisions, importing even books from Russia could carry a prison sentence of two to four years and a fine of up to EUR 1 million, he said.
“My appeal is simple: if you want peace, sovereignty, prosperity and security, finally make a different choice by voting No. 11 for Kostadin Kostadinov and Petar Volgin,” the candidate urged voters.
