The ongoing support provided by the Bulgarian state to Ukraine is causing the war in Ukraine to escalate and reach Bulgaria’s borders, Vazrazhdane Chair Kostadin Kostadinov said Tuesday, commenting on the drone attacks on two vessels in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea.
Kostadinov said he understood that Prime Minister Rumen Radev intended to convene the Consultative Council on National Security, but questioned what the body would decide, given that a drone had directly attacked Bulgarian territory just two and a half months earlier. He said that on that occasion, a gas transmission station near the village of Yovkovo, close to the Bulgarian-Romanian border, had narrowly avoided being blown up, adding that the drone had been Ukrainian. Kostadinov said Ukraine had not subsequently apologised for the incident, nor had the Bulgarian state requested an apology. Moreover, he said, Bulgaria had continued supplying the Ukrainian army with weapons and ammunition.
He added that the current strikes against vessels were a development that could logically be expected at some point given the continuation of hostilities. Although it remained unclear which side was responsible for hitting the vessels, he said, one of the two parties to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict had carried out the attacks.
According to Kostadinov, the incidents were a result of the support for Ukraine provided by the Bulgarian state under the current government. He added that Vazrazhdane had for years insisted that Bulgaria should seek to help overcome the conflict and that the country should act as a mediator.
Vazrazhdane MP Tsoncho Ganev told a news briefing later on Tuesday that his party calls for an immediate halt to arms exports to Ukraine, as well as to financial aid for Kyiv. “We call on Rumen Radev to immediately ban any exports of weapons, ammunition, or anything related to Ukraine. The excuses that we do not directly export anything to Ukraine do not hold water,” Ganev sad, noting that the Ukrainian side has thanked Bulgaria several times for everything we are doing. “Therefore, as of today, arms exports and monetary donations must be halted, and Bulgaria’s participation in any international agreements providing financial aid must be terminated, because this makes us vulnerable and draws us into the military conflict,” the MP argued.
