A vessel that has survived a drone attack in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the early hours of Tuesday, should be monitored closely, Captain Dimitar Dimitrov, president of the European Confederation of Maritime Masters’ Associations, told reporters.
The ship was one of two merchant vessels that were hit by aerial and submarine drones. The other one sank. The surviving ship’s crew was rescued but the other one is unaccounted for.
He added that the vessel was in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone, where specific action can only be taken if there is a risk to people or the environment.
There are established procedures for dealing with such situations, as well as plans for the Bulgarian state institutions to follow, Dimitrov said.
He stressed that the Black Sea had been designated as a war-risk area. This would lead to higher insurance costs for vessels and cargoes and, consequently, to higher prices for the goods being transported.
Dimitrov added that he expected the cost of exports to increase, which would reduce the competitiveness of the region. He also did not rule out the possibility of food shortages in certain parts of the world, as a large proportion of grain is exported from the Black Sea region.
