Presidential candidate and Vazrazhdane party leader Kostadin Kostadinov said he voted for a free and independent Bulgaria, “for a future for our country that we, Bulgarians, can determine ourselves.” Kostadinov spoke to journalists after casting his ballot in the presidential election at the Stoyan Mihaylovski Elementary School in Varna.
He said that he voted “for a Bulgarian president, not for a president of the Bulgarians” and added that it is high time for Bulgaria to make a choice in its own best interest, rather than in the interest of other organizations, other countries, or other commitments. “Our country must focus solely and exclusively on its own national interest,” Kostadinov further stated.
He also said that he was not surprised that voter turnout was low at this point. According to him, this is always the case in presidential elections. The last time there was high voter turnout was in 2016, but there were objective reasons for that, Kostadinov added. In his view, there have been many elections over the past five years, and perhaps that is another reason why so few people are turning out.
He urged Bulgarians to go to the polls nonetheless because, in his words, “the choice is ours, and if we give it up, we are giving up our own destiny, or, at the very least, we are giving up the right to determine it.”
He declined to make predictions about what might happen in the runoff of the presidential election, emphasizing that everything depends on the people. “I hope that today they will make a different choice, one that benefits the future of a free and independent Bulgaria,” Kostadinov said.
