ABC News’s Jonathan Karl involved X’s A.I. bot, Grok, to fact-check his testy exchange with House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) on Sunday’s This Week.

During Scalise’s appearance, he repeated a Republican talking point claiming President Donald Trump banning CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House was nothing compared to the “400 press credential” confiscated by former President Joe Biden.

“That’s actually not true about Biden,” Karl told Scalise after he made the claim. “The 400 individual reporters who had credentials did not reapply. There was only one that was actually denied a credential. And all of those who didn’t reapply were allowed to come in. They were not banned from the White House. That did not happen!”

After the show, Scalise ran to X to post his objection to Karl.

“This morning, ABC tried to claim the Biden White House didn’t cut off press access for over 400 journalists. The facts say otherwise…” Scalise wrote above a Fox News graphic and the words, “More than 440 reporter lose press passes after White House changes requirements.”

Karl responded to the post, writing, “Hey @grok – is it accurate to say ‘Joe Biden removed the press credentials from over 400 different agencies’ as @SteveScalise said this morning on This Week?”

Grok responded, “No. In 2023 the Biden White House tightened hard-pass rules requiring annual renewal, full-time news employment, a DC address, and recent campus access. Hard passes fell from 1,417 to 975 (about 442 fewer). Most holders simply did not reapply; only one application was denied. Day passes stayed available, so access was not barred. It affected individual reporters, not ‘agencies.’”

“So, @grok, only one application was denied. That’s a lot less than 400, correct?” Karl wrote. “And even those who did not apply to renew their hard passes could apply for day passes, right? Nobody was banned, right?”

“Yes,” Grok answered. “Only one hard-pass application was denied. The roughly 442 drop came almost entirely from holders who did not reapply under the tightened 2023 rules. Those without hard passes could still request day passes, which remained available. No one was banned from White House access.”

Scalise hasn’t responded to Karl’s Grok inquiries.
