President Donald Trump announced his ban against CNN, MS NOW, and Politico just hours after executive aide Natalie Harp showed him a clip of MS NOW bashing his administration, according to a Sunday report from The Wall Street Journal.
MS NOW’s critical coverage added to months of irritation about how the press has been covering his second term, but the video Harp showed Trump made his frustrations reach a “fever pitch,” the report said.
“Behind the scenes, the president has told aides he doesn’t have enough political allies defending him on television and making the case for his second-term achievements, according to people familiar with the matter,” the report continued. “White House spokesman Steven Cheung said Trump’s allies have ‘done an incredible job of getting the message out to voters.’”
WSJ’s story — from reporters Brian Schwartz, Meridith McGraw, and Alexander Ward — comes after Trump announced ban on Friday.
The president posted on Truth Social:
I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW (who recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!), and Politico (The recipients of an illegal and ridiculous $8 Million Dollar subscription, an All Time Record, directly from the United States Government, under Crooked Joe Biden, in order to keep them “alive.” Seems like corruption to me!), from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!
Trump’s decision was swiftly condemned by journalists. On Saturday, Fox News reporter and White House Correspondents’ Association President Jacqui Heinrich urged Trump to immediately end the ban, arguing the move violated the First Amendment and harmed the American public.
MS NOW’s Peter Alexander, meanwhile, argued Trump was merely trying to distract his MAGA base from his many “failures” with the ban.
The Journal reported Trump’s ban was met with “exasperation” by one senior official, who argued it would “do little to achieve the president’s goal of improving press coverage.”
