Balgarianovinite.com German Ambassador to Bulgaria Irene Maria Plank has visited the archaeological excavations at the prehistoric settlement mound of Tell Nenova near the village of Konyovo in Nova Zagora Municipality, the municipal administration said.
The visit was linked to the work of a Bulgarian-German research team that is investigating one of the significant prehistoric sites in the Nova Zagora region during this year’s archaeological season. During her visit, Ambassador Plank was briefed on the progress of the excavations and the findings from the expedition.
The archaeological project involves researchers from both countries, including Prof. Philipp Stockhammer of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Chief Assistant Prof. Bogdan Atanasov of New Bulgarian University, representatives of the Nova Zagora History Museum, as well as specialists from the Roman-Germanic Commission of the German Archaeological Institute and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig. Students from Bulgarian, German and US universities are also taking part in the excavations.
Tell Nenova is one of the tallest prehistoric settlement mounds in Europe. Archaeological research has shown that it was inhabited during the Chalcolithic and Bronze Age, before eventually being abandoned.
This season, the excavations focused on the central part of the mound and continued for four weeks. Archaeological finds dating from the final phase of the settlement’s occupation during the Early Bronze Age were uncovered. The finds are to be conserved, processed and subjected to scientific analysis in Bulgaria and Germany.
All artefacts discovered during the excavations will be documented and transferred to the Nova Zagora History Museum for safekeeping, as the museum is hosting the project.
Later, Ambassador Plank met with Nova Zagora Mayor Galya Zaharieva. They discussed cooperation between Bulgarian and German researchers and the importance of international scientific projects for preserving and promoting cultural heritage.
As part of her visit, Plank also visited the Nova Zagora History Museum, where she viewed exhibitions showcasing the region’s cultural and historical heritage.
