Balgarianovinite.com Conservation and restoration work has started on the Shipka Monument to Freedom, the Director of the Shipka-Buzludzha National Park-Museum, Chavdar Angelov, told BTA on Thursday. The monument will be closed to visitors until completion of the work.
The construction and installation works are to be completed within 642 calendar days from the official opening of the construction site. Given the extreme weather conditions typical of the Shipka Pass area, the work period will run from April 1 to October 31 over three consecutive calendar years, Angelov said. Conditions for outdoor work and access to the Monument are most favourable and safe during this period, he added.
One of the main problems is moisture penetrating the interior of the monument, and so restoration work will affect both parts of the facade and inner spaces, the director said.
The stairs leading to the monument’s northern entrance will also undergo major repairs, and the doors of the northern entrance will be fully restored. The monument will be equipped with its own power generator to ensure the uninterrupted operation of all systems and installations in the event of a power outage.
The current permanent exhibition will be dismantled and stored in the museum’s collection facility. Once the site has been accepted and commissioned, a new permanent exhibition, titled The Epopee of Shipka, expanded with more information, display cases and artefacts, while QR codes will provide additional material for visitors seeking more detail.
Angelov also noted that, coincidentally, the Shipka Monument is closing its doors on the eve of important anniversaries – the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Shipka in 2027 and the 150th anniversary of Bulgaria’s liberation in 2028. He pointed out that this did not mean the anniversaries would not be commemorated with the respect and acknowledgement owed to the heroes of the Liberation War. He added that suspending the restoration work for the next three years would mean restarting the procedures for selecting contractors, with no certainty as to when or how the work would be completed, potentially leading to a drastic deterioration in the monument’s overall condition.
“A lot of work lies ahead, but I hope we will achieve good results and fulfill the single goal of preserving, for future generations, the memory of the glorious Epic of Shipka, in accordance with the legacy of the Constituent National Assembly’s decision of 1879 that this monument should safeguard that memory,” Angelov said.
