Balgarianovinite.com Two million Bulgarians have used a product advertised as beneficial to health, Dimitar Ganev of the Trend polling agency said at the launch of the national information campaign “Health Without Risk” organized by Healthcare Magazine.
Ganev presented a nationally representative survey conducted among 1,000 adult Bulgarian citizens using face-to-face standardized interviews. According to the findings, 38% of respondents have used a medicinal product, food supplement or other product advertised as beneficial to health. Ganev explained that 1% of the sample corresponds to approximately 53,000 people, meaning that 38% represents about two million Bulgarians.
Thirty-five percent of survey participants said they had purchased a medicinal product, food supplement or other product advertised as beneficial to health under the influence of advertising, online publications or recommendations across the Internet, Ganev said. He commented that the similar percentages clearly indicate the scale of the influence of the so-called new media.
Asked how often they consult a doctor or pharmacist before using a medicinal product, food supplement or other product advertised as beneficial to health, 16% said they never do so. This represents 800,000 Bulgarians, the sociologist stressed.
Forty percent of respondents said they had used a product, medicine or food supplement advertised as beneficial to health on the recommendation not of a doctor or pharmacist, but of a cosmetician, influencer or trainer. According to the survey, around 40% also do not check the ingredients of such products, Ganev said. However, he stressed that when asked whether there are risks associated with this, 90% of respondents answered in the affirmative.
Dimitar Ganev also said that demographic breakdowns show that women are significantly more vulnerable to this type of advertising for food supplements and medicines advertised as beneficial to health. “Therefore, if a campaign is to be conducted, it should be aimed primarily at women,” the sociologist stressed.
The launch was attended by Deputy Health Minister Dr Nikolay Valov, Executive Director of the Bulgarian Drug Agency Bogdan Kirilov, and Bulgarian Medical Union Management Board Chairman Dr Nikolay Branzalov.
Healthcare Magazine’s “Health Without Risk” campaign is being implemented with the institutional support of the Ministry of Health, the Bulgarian Drug Agency and the Bulgarian Medical Association. Its main objective is to ensure that people have clear, accessible and verified information to help them recognize risks, check the origin and status of products, and make informed decisions about their health.
