The government’s goal is to turn Bulgaria into an important pillar of the stability and future of the European Union, with a developed industrial sector and sustainable public finances, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said at the opening of a high-level conference “Building Resilience Together: Bulgaria’s ESM Membership,” organized by the Ministry of Finance and the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) in Sofia.
The Prime Minister was categorical that Bulgaria is now offering solutions of strategic importance for the development of the EU.
According to the Prime Minister, the time has come for Bulgaria to make the best possible use of the advantages arising from the country’s membership in the euro area and the ESM. This is directly linked to achieving the government’s strategically important objective of changing the country’s economic model from one based on consumption and redistribution to a model of high economic growth, achievable by attracting high-value-added investment.
The Prime Minister said that the country’s membership in the ESM brings not only benefits but also responsibility, both for Bulgaria and for every member state of the mechanism, to work toward stable and sustainable public finances. He assured the audience that, guided by these principles, the government is working to reduce the deficit and restore the sustainability of the financial system.
According to him, Bulgaria can further benefit from its membership in the euro area and the ESM by ensuring predictability in its tax system and regulations, strengthening the rule of law, and improving its legislative framework.
Rumen Radev also stated that, for the stability of the EU and the ESM, it is of great importance for each member state to recognize its strengths and develop them not only in its own interests but also for the benefit of the wider community.
Among Bulgaria’s strengths, he highlighted the country’s geostrategic location, particularly in terms of Europe’s connectivity with Asia and the Middle East; its development as an energy hub for Southeast Europe, emphasizing the presence of an oil refinery as a strategic national and European asset; Bulgaria’s active foreign policy both on the European stage and beyond the EU; and the maintenance of good-neighborly relations. The Prime Minister also cited the country’s contribution to stability and security, including through maintaining secure external borders, as another strength.
At the same time, the Prime Minister emphasized that Bulgaria had not dismantled its extractive, processing, and heavy industries over the years, but had invested in their sustainability. In his words, this is particularly important for the EU today, given the current situation facing the Union.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the strong ecosystem, as he described it, that has been developed in the field of information technology, the availability of a skilled workforce, and investments in a sustainable energy grid and system.
“Now, as the time has come to build the industries of the future and develop new technologies, Bulgaria is ready,” he said emphatically.
The special guest at the conference is Pierre Gramegna, Managing Director of the ESM, who is due to take part in a discussion with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Galab Donev.
The conference is held to mark Bulgaria’s accession to the ESM at the end of this June, making it the 21st member of the stability mechanism.
