The state must restore trust in institutions and support young people, presidential candidate Iliana Iotova told supporters on Saturday.
She said the state had the means to support its citizens. Restoring effective governance through institutions operating under clear rules and laws that applied equally to everyone was a key task for the country’s leadership, she added.
Iotova said support for young people should be a state policy priority. She called for a large-scale programme offering young families tax relief, higher benefits and better access to housing.
Iotova opposed Bulgaria’s participation in the so-called Coalition of the Willing. She said it had failed to put forward a serious proposal for a future peace agreement in Ukraine and had ultimately been reduced to preparing a military contingent for deployment there. “As long as I am president, and after I receive your support, Bulgarian soldiers will not go to Ukraine,” Iotova said. She also said Europe’s gas storage facilities were 60% full, describing this as a sign of an impending crisis. She expressed concern about rising prices and urged the government to take effective measures to help people get through the winter more easily.
Iotova described the return of Tsar Samuel’s remains to Bulgaria as a historic moment and an auspicious sign, symbolizing the preservation of national memory and pride.
