Two outbreaks of sheep pox or goat pox were identified in the villages of Pastuh and Novi Chiflik, both in Kyustendil region, Western Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) reported on Saturday.
An initial outbreak was recorded in the village of Pastuh at a livestock farm where 29 small ruminants are kept.
A 5-kilometre protection zone has been established around the outbreak site, covering the villages of Vaksevo, Drumohar, Eremiya, Marvodol, Pastuh, Chetirtsi, Vukovo, Skrino, Blato, and Lokvata. A 20-kilometre surveillance zone was established around the outbreak.

A 5-kilometre protection zone has been established around the outbreak site, covering the villages of Bagrentsi, Bersin, Girchevtsi, Gorna Grashtitsa, Granitsa, Dolna Grashtitsa, Katrishte, Novi Chiflik, Tarnovlag, Lilyach, Nevestino, and Nedelkova Grashtitsa. A 20-kilometre surveillance zone was established around the outbreak.
Measures were taken to control and eradicate the disease in accordance with the provisions of European and national legislation. Restrictive measures are being implemented in the settlements within the protection and surveillance zones, including a ban on the movement of sheep and goats, with the exception of animals intended for immediate slaughter under certain conditions.
The disease poses no danger to humans, but its spread can cause significant economic damage.
