Bulgarian media abroad preserve national identity and extend Bulgaria’s presence beyond its physical borders, LIK magazine editor-in-chief Associate Professor Georgi Lozanov said at the opening of the “Connected Through Words” exhibition at the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Budapest on Monday.
The exhibition, featuring 31 Bulgarian-language media outlets operating outside the country, was presented as part of the official opening of the 21st World Meeting of Bulgarian Media, held on October 19 and 20 in Budapest and Esztergom, Hungary.
“Through Bulgarian-language media, Bulgaria’s borders become the borders of Bulgarian speech, and speech itself has no borders,” Lozanov said. He stressed that these media outlets serve not only as sources of information but also as a means of preserving the identity of Bulgarian communities around the world.
According to Lozanov, Bulgarian media abroad face the complex task of preserving national consciousness while helping fellow Bulgarians integrate into the societies in which they live. He described this approach as modern patriotism, based not on hostility towards those who are different, but on respect for diversity.
Lozanov said that Bulgarian media abroad also help create and sustain identity in an environment where communities can be built not only on similarities but also through the acceptance of differences.
The Monday programme of the 21st World Meeting of Bulgarian Media began at 9 a.m. with a meeting between participants and Marton Hajdu, Chair of the Hungarian Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee.
The participants were subsequently given the opportunity to tour the parliament building, including its ceremonial staircase, and view the Holy Crown of Hungary. The delegation was welcomed by Zoltan Tar, Hungary’s Minister of Public Relations and Culture, who received a plaque bearing the image of St John of Rila as a gift.
The programme continued with the opening of an exhibition dedicated to Bulgarian-Hungarian Friendship Day in the foyer of the Barankovics building, an office building for members of the Hungarian Parliament.
BTA is organizing the 21st World Meeting of Bulgarian Media in Hungary with the support of DSK Bank, OTP Group, Aurubis Bulgaria, A1, SOF Connect – the operator of Vasil Levski Sofia Airport, Geotechmin, Postbank and the 13 Centuries Bulgaria National Endowment Fund. The forum is expected to bring together participants from 25 countries, both in person and online.
