MEPs Discuss Erasmus+ Budget Increase and Expansion Beyond EU, as Bulgaria Plans Diplomatic Internships for Students 2026

Members of the European Parliament discussed in Strasbourg on Wednesday increasing the budget of the Erasmus+ programme for the 2028-2034 period and expanding its reach beyond the EU. Although they emphasized different aspects, participants in the debate agreed that Erasmus+ is one of the EU’s most successful programmes.
The debate was opened by rapporteur for the programme Bogdan Zdrojewski, a member of the European People’s Party (EPP) group. He said the proposed budget was the minimum the programme needed and that any cuts would prevent young people from pursuing their educational aspirations. According to Zdrojewski, the most important battle would come in 2027 during tripartite negotiations between the European Parliament, the Council of the EU and the European Commission.
European Commission Executive Vice-President Roxana Minzatu said the Commission wanted to preserve what worked well in the programme while making it more accessible and reducing bureaucracy.
MEPs from various political groups highlighted the programme’s importance for young people and the opportunities it offers Europeans to spend time in another EU member state.
Meanwhile, also on Wednesday in Sofia, the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Association for Supporting the Academic Community (APAO) signed a cooperation agreement enabling students at Bulgarian higher education institutions to undertake Erasmus+ internships at Bulgaria’s diplomatic missions abroad, the Foreign Ministry said.
Under the pilot initiative, Bulgarian students will be able to gain practical experience at the country’s diplomatic missions in The Hague, London, Paris, Berlin and Vienna. The internships will last between two and 12 months, with financial support provided in accordance with the applicable Erasmus+ rules, with assistance from APAO. Applications will open in early 2027 and will be submitted through the respective higher education institution.
