Students from the Krastyo Sarafov National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts (NATFA) held their tenth protest march, demanding the resignation of Rector Prof. Miroslav Dachev and, for the first time, that of Minister of Education and Science Georgi Valchev. The protesters are calling for the minister’s resignation because, in their words, he is using academic autonomy as an excuse for the lack of an adequate response. The students support academic autonomy as a principle but object to its being used as a cover for unchecked actions and a lack of accountability.
The protesters said that the actions taken so far by the Ministry of Education have not led to a solution, and their demands have been ignored. Ivayla Zhekova, a film and television directing student and member of NATFA’s initiative committee, told BTA: “The situation remains the same. The only thing the institutions have told us throughout this entire period is to try to seek dialogue. We have never stopped seeking dialogue, even since we began calling for these people’s resignations. We are not the ones with a problem with dialogue.”
The first protest demanding Dachev’s resignation was staged in July due to dissatisfaction with the academy’s administration and concerns that it might be excluded from the European university alliance FilmEU and the Erasmus+ programme.
