Bulgarian Deputy Defence Minister Lyubomir Monov highlighted the need for a stronger and more effective European Defence Agency (EDA) to support EU Member States in developing defence capabilities and making use of European Union instruments. He took part on Monday in a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (Defence) and a meeting of the EDA Steering Board in Brussels, the Defence Ministry said.
The EDA meeting presented and discussed its first Annual Defence Readiness Report. The document was described as an objective basis for assessing progress and setting the next priorities for Member States, the ministry said.
Monov supported the second-stage measures to strengthen the EDA, including expanding its role in innovation, capability development and joint procurement of defence products and services, the ministry said.
Military mobility was also highlighted as a key factor for the security of the Eastern Flank and the Black Sea region. Monov also stressed the need to develop capabilities in air and missile defence, drones and counter-drone systems.
Monov said European defence readiness required not only increased investment but also better coordination among Member States. The EDA can play an increasingly important role in this process, he said.
In Brussels, the Deputy Defence Minister met with Sebastian Hartmann, Parliamentary State Secretary to Germany’s Federal Minister of Defence. The talks focused on deepening bilateral military cooperation and concrete steps to accelerate joint projects under the SAFE instrument.
The Bulgarian side stressed the importance of greater participation by Bulgaria’s defence industry in implementing the projects through industrial cooperation and integration into European supply chains. Opportunities for establishing long-term partnerships with the German defence industry were also discussed, the ministry said.
