The pre-premiere of the sixth season of the Bulgarian crime series Undercover (Pod prikritie) was held Sunday evening at the biggest Hall 1 of the NDK convention centre in Sofia, drawing a full house after a 10-year break.
The sixth season comes a decade after the fifth and final season aired in 2016. Undercover, which premiered on BNT in 2011, became one of Bulgaria’s most successful television productions. Some episodes attracted more than 500,000 viewers in Bulgaria, while the series was sold or distributed in more than 180 territories worldwide, making it the best-selling Bulgarian television production internationally, according to BNT.
A large crowd gathered outside NDK more than an hour before the screening to welcome the cast and creative team on the red carpet. BNT Director General Milena Milotinova said all tickets for the event had sold out at the box office in less than two days, before online sales had even begun.
“How wonderful it is to see a full hall after a 10-year break of Undercover,” Milotinova said, thanking the audience for its loyalty. She added that the creative team had put their “heart and soul” into the new season and expressed hope that viewers would enjoy it.
The audience applauded the characters during the screening and welcomed the cast on stage afterwards. Director Viktor Bozhinov said the series was created “by Bulgarian authors, with Bulgarian actors, for a Bulgarian audience.” The fact that the hall was full, he said, was a sign that “we should make good Bulgarian series.”
Bozhinov also invited producer Dimitar Mitovski, whose idea launched the project, onto the stage. Mitovski thanked those involved in making the series and the audience, saying that the production exists because of them.
Lead screenwriter Vanya Nikolova asked the audience whether it wanted more, prompting loud applause. “From now on, whatever we have done, whether you like it or not, this series is yours,” she said.
Actor Vladimir Penev, responding to a prompt from the audience, assured viewers that he would appear in the new season and promised to “resolve things in the best possible way”. New cast member Pavel Ivanov told the audience to watch how the story develops, while actor Mihail Bilalov promised “many surprises. Executive producer Magardich Halvadzhiyan said the team had worked to create what he described as an exceptional season.
The series is scheduled to return to BNT’s television schedule in October.
