Prime Minister Rumen Radev, Innovation and Digital Transformation Minister Ivan Vasilev, Energy Minister Iva Petrova, representatives of investors, and of Tesla attended the groundbreaking ceremony for a battery park for electricity storage in Tvarditsa, in the southeastern Sliven Region, on Tuesday. The initiative is part of an investment programme to modernize the country’s energy infrastructure, with a total value exceeding EUR 350 million.
The project involves the construction of a five-hour electricity storage system with a capacity of 300 MWh, based on Tesla Megapack 2XL technology. According to the information provided, the facility will consist of 80 battery Tesla Megapack 2XL units paired with 20 transformers operating at 4.4 MVA each.
The investment in Tvarditsa is the first of three planned systems that will be implemented in partnership between Asarel-Trade, Power Profit, and Tesla. The total storage capacity of the three projects will exceed 2,300 MWh.
“It is a pleasure for me to break ground not only for the development of Tvarditsa and the region, but also for the modernization of the Bulgarian economy,” Radev said at the ceremony. According to him, the ability to store electricity reliably and sustainably is of strategic importance for the future of the energy sector and the economy.
“Whoever succeeds in building the capacity for reliable, sustainable energy storage holds the key to the future,” Radev emphasized. He noted that Bulgaria already holds a leading position in Europe in terms of the share of battery storage capacity relative to the size of its electricity system.
According to the Prime Minister, such investments increase the resilience of the power system, improve its balance and flexibility, and create the conditions for lower electricity prices. “Modern energy infrastructure is not just an important element of the economy. It is now a prerequisite for economic growth,” he said.
Energy Minister Petrova described the groundbreaking ceremony as the result of coordinated actions and joint efforts by a wide range of stakeholders. She emphasized that as the share of renewable energy sources increases, so does the need for flexibility in the electricity system, for which battery technologies are of vital importance.
According to her, storage systems with a total capacity of over 6 GW have been implemented in Bulgaria in less than a year and a half. She noted that the development of these technologies has contributed to the security of energy supplies in the region during critical summer periods.
“We will make every effort to maintain this strategic advantage by taking appropriate next steps,” Petrova stated.
She pointed out that the Energy Ministry will continue to work on developing a regulatory framework that supports investments in battery storage. Other priorities include new energy capacity and the development of pumped-storage hydroelectric power plants.
The goal is for Bulgaria to maintain the security of its energy supplies and its position as an attractive destination for investment, strategic partnerships, and technological innovation.
In his address to the participants, Asarel-Trade manager Rumen Sabev Radev described the ceremony as the beginning of a long-term process that includes preparing the construction site, infrastructure development, the implementation of the investment, and the connection of the facility to the country’s power grid. He expressed confidence that the project would be completed on schedule and emphasized the importance of long-term investments in Bulgaria.
The Asarel-Trade manager also highlighted the expansion of operations into digital critical infrastructure and the development of solutions related to artificial intelligence. “We are here to stay. We are not leaving our country. We are working in our country and building the future in our country,” he said, identifying energy storage as an important part of this vision.
To implement the project, a comprehensive infrastructure will be built, combining construction activities, power facilities, and high-tech storage systems.
Sunotec founder and CEO Kaloyan Velichkov emphasized the importance of the company’s participation in the project and described the initiative as a significant step in the development of high-tech energy infrastructure in Bulgaria. He congratulated the investors on their decision to invest in the country and noted that cooperation between the government and the business sector can create the conditions necessary for the implementation of significant investment projects.
According to the information presented, when fully charged, the battery farm will have a reserve of electricity capable of meeting Tvarditsa’s consumption needs for an extended period.
Tvarditsa Mayor Maria Gvozdeikova-Zlateva welcomed the participants at the ceremony and described the investment as an important opportunity for the municipality’s development. She emphasized that every new investment is a sign of confidence in the region’s potential, and that projects in high-tech sectors can have an impact far beyond the local community.
“The future of small municipalities also depends on their ability to attract big ideas and significant investments,” the Mayor said, thanking the investors, partners, and institutions for their trust in Tvarditsa. In her words, sustainable development requires consistent partnership between local government, the state, and the business sector.
The launch of the project in Tvarditsa lays the foundation for a new high-tech facility aimed at more efficient electricity management, increasing the flexibility of the energy system.
