About one in six people in Bulgaria were unable to afford a meal with meat at least once every other day in 2025, according to Eurostat’s latest data on European living conditions.
The share of people in Bulgaria who could not afford to eat meat every other day continued to decline for the 13th consecutive year, reaching 15.8% in 2025, compared with an EU average of 8.5%.
In 2012, the last year when an increase was recorded, just over half (51.9%) of the country’s population could not afford to eat meat at least once every other day.
In 2014, the share fell below 40% (39.5%), in 2019 it dropped below 30% (27.6%), and in 2023 it fell below 20% for the first time (19.9%). It declined further to 18.7% in 2024.
Despite the improvement, Bulgaria remains among the EU Member States with the highest share of people unable to afford to eat meat every other day. Only Romania (18.1%) recorded a higher share last year. Hungary (15.1%), Slovakia (14.2%), Greece (12.8%), Malta (11.5%), France (11.2%) and Germany (11.1%) also recorded shares above 10%. In 2025, 12.1% of people in the EU could not afford to participate regularly in a leisure activity. The share in Bulgaria was 14.5%.
The largest share of people unable to afford recreational activities was recorded in Greece (27.3%), followed by Romania (23.3%), Lithuania (17.9%), Latvia (16.2%) and Hungary (15.8%). Bulgaria ranked sixth among EU Member States with the highest share of people unable to afford recreational activities.
As for internet access, 2% of people in the EU were unable to afford an internet connection for personal use at home. The share varied across EU Member States, ranging from 0.1% in Finland to 6.2% in Romania. Bulgaria (5.9%) had the second-highest share of people unable to afford internet access in 2025. The figure stood at 7% the previous year.
