Cultural tourism has become an important part of Bulgaria’s tourism sector over the past two decades, with the International Cultural Tourism Exhibition in Veliko Tarnovo playing a key role in its development, said Mayor Daniel Panov at the opening of the 21st edition on Wednesday here.
The Мayor noted that the current tourist season has been challenging and called for greater attention to Bulgarian tourists in 2027. He stressed the need for more affordable hotel, restaurant and spa prices, as well as accessible packages for young people and students and better access to museums and heritage sites.
Since the exhibition was launched, universities and vocational schools have introduced programmes related to cultural tourism. Panov pointed out that municipal cultural calendars have also helped promote local crafts, traditions, cuisine and tourism opportunities, adding that European, national and municipal funding has supported the restoration of numerous historic buildings, churches and cultural monuments.
More than 40 municipalities, cultural institutions, tourism destinations, tour operators and tourist information centres are taking part in the 21st International Cultural Tourism Exhibition, with separate stands highlighting tourism opportunities and cooperation with Azerbaijan, China and the Serbian city of Nis. The programme includes a professional meeting on “China–Bulgaria Tourism 2026,” a discussion on tourism amid global changes, and culinary tastings.
The International Cultural Tourism Exhibition was initiated by Veliko Tarnovo Municipality and is organized with the Tourism Ministry, with support from the Culture Ministry. It is part of Bulgaria’s annual national tourism advertising programme.
