The documentary NAZA focused on human rights will be screened at the DocuMental Film Festival in Sofia on October 5, the organizers said on Tuesday. The film will be screened here less than a month after its global premiere at the Venice Film Festival where it won the Special Jury Prize.
Filmed at night from Tel Aviv rooftops, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor’s investigative documentary examines the civilian casualties of Israel’s military operations in Gaza and the systems behind targeted killings of Palestinians.
One Israeli soldier interviewed in the documentary explained that NAZA is an acronym. Every potential target – for example, an individual Hamas member – is assigned a NAZA value in an AI software. This value represents the expected number of civilian fatalities in the event of an air strike on that target. Targets with values below 20 did not require special authorization. Approvals were granted for values up to 500. The combined NAZA values of all potential Hamas fighters exceeded the total population of Gaza, an interviewee noted.
The two directors shared: “We made this film out of a sense of obligation to use our position as Israeli film-makers and journalists to examine the systems behind the mass killing of Palestinian civilians for which our country is responsible. While filming over the past three years, we found ourselves asking the very questions that were asked by our grandparents’ generation and throughout the 20th century: how does one group of people allow the total dehumanisation of another? What do the inner workings of such a system look like?”
