Blind musicians and dancers from different generations will perform together at the Shared Light concert on Thursday to mark International White Cane Safety Day, the organizers said. The concert will take place at City Mark Art Centre in Sofia.
The event is organized by the National Community Centre for the Blind Louis Braille 1928 under the patronage of Sredets District Mayor Traicho Traikov.
The concert is part of the Shared Art – Light for Blind Artists and Performers project, which receives financial support from the Agency for People with Disabilities. The project enables visually impaired people to present their work to a wider audience.
The organizers also seek to draw attention to the need for more accessible literature for blind children. Their work includes publishing children’s books in Braille with tactile illustrations and continuing to publish Mayak (Lighthouse) magazine.
Tactile illustrations help children form mental images of characters, objects and animals through touch, the organizers said. One of the community centre’s long-term goals is to make at least 5% of children’s titles on the Bulgarian book market available in Braille.
